Velo Virtuoso closed on Monday 7th July
With the 2014 Tour de France coming into Essex for stage 3 we will closed for business on Monday 7th July (we’re race fans, we will be at the roadside spectating). We will be open as normal on Sunday 6th from 10 until 4 and back open on Tuesday from 9 until 8.
Here’s the route for the stage. There’s plenty of good vantage points within a ride of Hadleigh. The promotional caravan will go through ahead of the race itself so if you feel the need for a free hat, pen, flag or sticker its a good idea to get there early.
Latest offers on ROTOR
Here at Velo Virtuoso we have been doing a lot of single ring conversions for MTB customers and on recent custom builds (check our Instagram feed). We’ve met with ROTOR today and can announce some great deals on single ring Rotor set ups.
Those of you running a Specialized or SRAM crankset need a converter to run a non standard (Specialized or SRAM) chainring. Rotor have always been able to supply a spider that will allow you to run a ‘thick thin’ (or narrow wide if you prefer!) Q ring for a 1 x 10 or 1 x 11 set up and we can announce a great deal for you today.
We can offer a Rotor QX1 thick thin chainring and the relevant spider so you can go for a 1 x set up for your Specialized or SRAM equipped bike for the low price of £99. That’s a £25 saving on normal RRP and we will fit AND supply for this price.
The QX1 rings are the choice of XCM world champion Christoph Sauser (road race champion Rui Costa rides Q rings too!) so you can be confident that Q rings are competition ready as well as packing a significant performance advantage. We can supply QX1 rings in 28, 30, 32, 34 and 36 tooth and each ring. Obviously we can supply QX1 chainrings only also.
QX1 rings are fully compatible with the MTB specific Rex cranks with 1 x, 2 x and 3 x set ups available and the forged Rex 2 cranks available from £249. For those of you looking to replace a triple set up we can offer Rotor 3D chainsets with up to £159 off RRP from £120. Contact us for more details!
Still not convinced about the benefits of Q rings? Come into the store and see our latest demo’s that show how Q rings work like a 48 tooth chaining at the hardest part of the pedal stroke but give you the power of a 53 tooth chainset when you’re putting out the most power. Our own Rotor equipped riders have seen an increase of more than 8% in speed and more than 7% in power since switching to Q rings.
And coming soon Rotor will be introducing 1 x set ups for Cyclocross. Having a 1 x set up for CX is looking like the way to go next season and Rotor will have CX specific 1 x Q rings with dedicated cranksets available to order.

On a standard bike there are three ‘contact points’. These are the points where part of you, the rider, is in contact with the bike – the handlebars, the pedals and perhaps most importantly the saddle. When you’re riding over a longer distance it’s going to be one of these three contact areas where you’re likely to feel sore or in pain. The good news is that it’s relatively simple to achieve comfort at each contact point with some simple changes.
Finding the right saddle, one that’s comfortable for you, is one of the most important things you can do to achieve an effective riding position that is pain free for riding over distances in most conditions. This isn’t as simple as it sounds as the subject of saddle design is one of the most controversial subjects in terms of what works. With round, semi-round and flat profiles and designs featuring cut outs and different widths the choice can often seem bewildering.
This is where a demo saddle can help. We offer a range of demo saddles here at Velo Virtuoso that can help every rider to narrow down their choices and more importantly try a particular shape and design of saddle before investing in a new one.
We currently offer demo saddles from Prologo and SDG and have six different styles to chose from including women’s specific models. When you consider that Prologo offer 24 different saddle designs, 5 of which come in different widths it becomes clear why ‘trying before buying’ can be so useful!
It’s good to have a starting point and Prologo helpfully provide a guide to their range covering shape, size, gender and end use. See below for more details.
Step 1 – Shape
Saddles come in ROUND, SEMI ROUND and FLAT shapes. Round is recommended for distance riding and shares the riders weight over the whole seating area to avoid pressure in the pelvic area. Semi round is for medium to long distance riding and suitable for a variety of different uses; it’s a good all round compromise shape. Flat saddles are best for short or medium distances and for riders who move around on the saddle / bike. Flat saddles have a wider seating area and offer excellent support across the whole saddle.
Step 2 – Size
Saddles come in 134, 141 and 143mm widths. The 134mm width should be suitable for 90% of riders and is available on round, semi round and flat saddles. For the remaining 10% of riders there’s a choice of 141 and 143mm widths. These saddles are available in semi round for the 141mm width and round for the 143mm width.
Step 3 – Gender
Saddles are available in MEN’S, WOMEN’S and UNISEX profiles. Men’s saddles are specifically designed to reduce pressure in the perineal area. Women’s specific saddles provide total pressure reduction in key areas. Unisex saddles are designed for all kinds of cyclist and offer high performance for men and women.
Step 4 – End Use
Saddles are available for the following disciplines – ROAD, XC MTB, MARATHON, ALL MOUNTAIN, TIME TRiAL, DOWNHILL, FREERIDE, TRIATHLON and ALL ROUND uses. Saddles have been conceived for specific end uses thanks to Prologo’s partnerships with teams like Tinkoff Saxo, Orica Green Edge, Cannondale and Merida Multivan.
At Velo Virtuoso we can also help you to achieve an efficient and comfortable saddle height and position using our Bikefitting.com bike fitting software. This provides a schematic 2D plan with measurements for correct saddle height and position of the saddle rails in relation to the seatpost in addition to other measurements like ideal stem and crank length. We offer a standard bike fit using Bikefitting.com software from £50 or free when purchasing a new bike.
You can achieve comfort via your other contact points; the bars and pedals at Velo Virtuoso. We stock a wide range of bar tape and grips from top brands like Prologo, Supacaz, Lizard Skins and Deda and there’s 10% off all (in stock) saddles, bar tape and grips during May 2014.
We’ve had a fantastic reaction to Frog bikes since we became a stockist earlier this year. Frog are a british bike brand specialising in lightweight kids bikes and a range that runs from balance bikes through to 26″ wheel size geared bikes for teens. Unlike many of the cheap kids bikes sold through supermarkets and ebay, Frog bikes use lightweight aluminum frames and top components from Shimano and Tektro.
Frog bikes aren’t sold through online retailers. It’s important that the bikes are assembled and checked over by qualified mechanics before handing over to the customer. Order a Frog bike for your child through Velo Virtuoso and you can be confident that the bike will be given a thorough safety check before you collect it and that brakes and gears work smoothly.
Frog have just announced some new additions with the new three bike Frog road / CX range. Starting at £400 with the Frog Road 58, the bikes all feature Frog’s signature lightweight all aluminum frame and forks. The range should start to ship in June 2014, but we can take orders now on the bikes with three sizes available covering 20″. 24″ and 26″ wheels.
The Frog 58 and 67 have 20″ and 24″ wheel sizes respectively. The largest bike in the range is the Frog 70 with 26″ wheels at £450 (the Frog 67 is £425). All of the bikes feature integrated shifting and brake levers from Microshift with the Frog 58 and 67 having 9 speeds and the Frog 70 18 speeds.
A unique feature of the entire Frog road bike range and one that sets it apart from the competition is that each bike is supplied with two sets of tyres. As well as a set of road specific tyres every Frog road bike will be delivered with treaded cyclocross tyres as well. These tyres will allow the bike to used for light off road riding in addition to road use, but more importantly means that the whole family can still ride together if everyone else rides MTB or Hybrid style bikes.
Each bike is equipped with Tektro cyclocross style cantilever brakes that work equally well for road use and the drop handlebars feature auxiliary brake levers on the bar tops in addition to the short reach combined gear and brake levers. Each bike is available in three colours; black, white and red.
Contact us for information or call into the store to place your order for (expected) June delivery.
Ordering the correct size Frog bike
Here at Velo Virtuoso we pride ourselves on making sure that you have the correct sized bike whether that’s a full size MTB or road bike or a specialist TT model. The same applies to Frog bikes and we can use of Bikefitting.com bike fit equipment to make sure that we get the right size Frog bike for your child.
There’s a Frog bikes sizing guide here (http://tinyurl.com/lnnexmr) but if you want to buy with confidence we’re happy to measure your child and recommend a size. Each model in the Frog range represents it’s size, for example a Frog 48 will fit a minimum 48cm inside leg.
Frog base this measurement on the rider having both feet flat on the ground while sat on the saddle. As the rider becomes more confident using tip toes or just one foot to balance the bike when stationary so it’s possible to consider a larger model to allow some growing room and greater duration before needing to consider a new bike.
Contact us or call in for more information about correct sizing for your childs next bike or any aspect of the Frog kids bike range.

Get the ideal fit on your Felt road bike
We’re now able to offer a tailored bike fit service on Felt road bikes from the F, Z and ZW series. Using our Bikefitting.com equipment we can use eight seperate measurements to determine the optimum frame size for you as well exact measurements for saddle height alongside bar and stem positioning.
The F series is Felt’s lightest and stiffest road bike family. Featuring classic race geometry with horizontal top tube, low head tube, sharp trail geometry and tight wheelbase the F series is optimised to produce race performance body positioning.
The Z series is Felt’s most versatile road bike. As well as delivering quick, agile handling the Z series provides the compliance and fit necessary to make the longest rides enjoyable. Z series bikes use a slighty taller headtube for greater flexibility in bar and stem position along with sloping top tubes for greater standover height. With a longer wheelbase than the F series for confident handling the Z series is designed to be race ready without limiting rider position or all day capability.
The ZW series is Felt’s genuine women’s specific road bike. Part of Felt’s ‘Fit Woman’ range of products the ZW addresses the specific needs of female cyclists from both an engineering and anatomical perspective. Where some manufacturers just change graphics to distinguish them from men’s models Felt designed the ZW series from scratch with a long wheelbase for enhanced stability and a sloping top tube for improved standover height. The ZW series is not just a smaller frame, every aspect of the design has been reverse engineered by Felt to optimise the bike for female riders.
The Z series starts at £549 with 8 speed Shimano Claris gearing, aluminum frame and carbon fork. The Z85 at £949 qualifies for Bike to Work schemes and features Shimano 105 10 speed gearing with superlite aluminum frame and carbon fork. Full carbon framed Z series bikes start at £1099.
The F series is available from £599 with Shimano Sora 9 speed gearing, aluminum frame and carbon fork. There are two more options that qualify for Bike to Work schemes; the F85 with 10 speed Shimano Tiagra gearing and the F75 with 10 speed Shimano 105 at £799 and £949. Carbon options begin at £1170.
The women’s specific ZW series begins at £599 with the ZW100 with Shimano Claris 8 speed gearing and aluminum frame and carbon fork. The aluminum framed ZW85 qualifies for Bike to Work schemes at £949 and features a carbon fork and Shimano 105 10 speed gearing. The carbon framed ZW5 is £1599.
In addition to offering Felt road bikes via Bike to Work schemes we will price match equivalent specified bikes from any local retailers (not web)* on selected models only.
Call into the shop to talk about your requirements in more detail and discuss the ideal Felt road bike for your needs in the perfect size with Velo Virtuoso and Bikefitting.com.
* This offer applies to selected bikes only and may be withdrawn at anytime.
Upgrade your drive train with a custom Rotor set up !
At Velo Virtuoso we are premier Rotor dealers for 2014. We’re able to offer custom upgrades to the drivetrain on your road bike or MTB with a new set of Rotor Q rings teamed with a Rotor chainset or using your existing cranks and spider. Rotor Q rings are available for a variety of fitments including Shimano, Campagnolo, SRAM and FSA road chainsets and Shimano and SRAM (XX) in MTB. As a premier dealer we’re the only local store where you can try Rotor Q rings for yourself before buying with demo chainrings and bikes available now.
When switching to one of the exceptionally lightweight Rotor crank options we can use one of nine Rotor bottom bracket combinations if required. Rotor bottom brackets also allow 24mm cranks to be used in BB30 frames with their adaptors. Rotor BB’s start at £45 and we offer a ceramic bearing option at £139. We also offer the unique Rotor Self Aligning Bottom Bracket (SABB). Ultra lightweight at only 82g (road version) the SABB’s bearings are located in floating housings that ensure perfect alignment irrespective of ‘outside’ influences on the bottom bracket. Of course, you don’t need to upgrade to a Rotor crank to enjoy the benefits of a smooth running Rotor BB. We can replace your existing BB with a Rotor item as part of our service offering.
Contact us or call into the store to discuss a bottom bracket upgrade for your bike.
Why choose Rotor Q Rings?
Q-rings make your spin cycle smoother, make climbing easier on the legs and helps reduce the build up of lactates during hard efforts. Pro riders like world champions Rui Costa and Marianne Vos say they are great for stage racing and blocks of training. Q-Rings do not eliminate the dead-spot but help to reduce its negative effects, moving the legs easier through the dead spot imitating a smaller circular chainring and enabling the legs to remain in the power stroke for a longer period of time when compared to round chainrings. Q-Rings change the equivalent tooth size by decreasing it before the dead-spots and increasing it when the rider is in the power mode (when more power is available at the pedal down stroke). Take a look at the image below that demonstrates the change in chainring size that Q rings imitate to give your more power and more speed.
OCP (Optimum Chainring Position), a Rotor patented feature is the secret to success, where others have failed. The OCP system allows you to choose the angle where you obtain the maximum gear ratio, customizing pedaling to each and every cyclist, where it is needed most. Since the maximum power moment is different for every cyclist (performance is different depending on pedaling style and position on the bike), the OCP System customizes the Rotor Q-Rings to your geometry and cycling habits, and takes maximum advantage of alternative leg inertias on every pedal rotation.
There are five different positions on a typical set of road Q rings and three on MTB fitments. We recommend a minimum of ten hours on Q rings before changing the position from the default setting. Based on our own experiences riding Q rings across road, cross and MTB Q rings deliver an effective performance upgrade in the default setting but we can offer a custom set up based on each riders feedback after a series of rides.
As a Rotor premier dealer you can try Q rings for yourself with a compact demo chainring available for chainsets using 110 BCD (most Shimano, SRAM and FSA cranks). See the benefits yourself before you buy. We can also offer shorter demo rides on our own bikes equipped with Rotor Q rings (road, MTB and cross bikes available on request).
